I recently was given the advice to just walk away, don't yell or try to stop it - just refuse to talk while they are having a tantrum - obviously this doesn't work well in public but I have to say now that I have stopped giving any attention to tantrums at home consistently, they have decreased tremendously - not all together - but they are few and far between.
